Scott McGregor

Sport: Baseball
Team: Aberdeen Ironbirds (Baltimore Orioles)

It was not until experiencing the reality of your entire career ending on one single pitch that Scott McGregor began to search for something more lasting. In June of 1979 his arm became sore. It got so bad he couldn’t even throw the ball to home plate. The doctor’s diagnosed the problem to be tendonitis and told him there was nothing that they could do for him. It was then that he first began to understand that there is a lot more to life than playing baseball and getting your picture on a bubble gum card.

Scott’s life was in good hands though, the plan that God had for him would not be altered by injury. You see the power of prayer was already over his life – while Scott was in the minors and unsaved he had a pitching coach named Cloyd Boyer that drug him to church and prayed over his life. In the big leagues Scott was blessed by God introducing former major league outfielder Pat Kelley into his life. “Pat was extremely instrumental in my salvation”.

Scott began attending Baseball Chapel regularly, meeting players that had a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. The more he observed them, the more he wanted the peace and happiness they displayed. He wanted to be more like Christ and didn’t even know it yet. As Scott started praying and reading the Bible, he felt a change occurring from the inside. It was then that Scott prayed this prayer, “Something’s missing in my life. I think it’s you. I want that inner joy and peace I see in other players. I want you in my life.” From that day forward God’s plan for his life began to unfold. Scott went on to have a great career and has since been inducted into the Baltimore Orioles Hall of Fame. After leaving baseball, Scott became a youth pastor in the Baltimore area from 1988 through 1991 and served as both an Associate Pastor and Senior Pastor from 1992 to 2001 in Dover, Delaware. In June of 2001 after careful prayer and consideration of family, he felt God calling him back into baseball.

Scott is now a pitching coach in the Orioles minor league system, currently assigned to the Aberdeen Ironbirds of the New York – Penn League (A). “I look forward to having the same effect on young players as Cloyd had on my life”, says Scott. If he reaches one player it will be worth his return, because that one player could be his assignment. That one player could be the next Billy Graham!
